Strawberry Fields Forever: My Baguio Strawberry Farm Experience

It had always been a dream for me to go to the Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad, Benguet. I had been to Baguio a couple of times but I never had the chance to visit the famous farm. But during my last visit to Baguio during the third week of February 2012, a few days before Panagbenga Festival, I swore I won't miss it anymore. And so I went.

Tip #1: Never leave for the Strawberry Farm later than 7:00am. Traffic can be ugly in Baguio. The farm opens as early as 6:00am. As much as possible, be there at that time for maximum farming experience. It's fun seeing the dew on the leaves you know?

We arrived at the farm of my dreams at around 6:30am. Not bad. This morning photo of the strawberry field as well as the houses and hills in La Trinidad relaxes me a lot.

When we arrived, we were greeted with a smile by the kind-faced caretaker of the strawberry field we went into. There are actually a lot of them in here but he was the first one we met so we decided to pick in his field. That morning, he had already harvested this basket full of "Festival" breed of strawberries. Festival strawberries are the elongated shaped and bloody red colored strawberries growing in La Trinidad.

Tip #2: Notice that every other walkway in between rows of planted strawberries are wet. Some are dry. This means you can only walk upon the dry ones. Don't get slipped ok?

My Shanghai Photo Diary (Part 2: The City Tour)

My Shanghai Visual Diary is a collection of photos I took during my half-year stay in a beautiful city in Mainland China. The beautiful city is often called the "Paris of the East" and I spent many days of freedom, friendship and happiness in there. This photo collection is my gratitude to everyone who made that experience for us everlasting and unforgettable.

Part 2 is about our first city tour.

Good morning! Morning starts right when I have a glimpse of the beautiful Wudong Lu. Across our dormitory in Fudan University is another university called Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.

Our first stop is Pudong. And behind us is the infamous Oriental Pearl TV Tower which is quite the top of the mind iconic structure when Shanghai is the topic. Oriental Pearl TV Tower is third tallest TV and radio tower in the world.

Some of my co-scholars- Diana, Eds, Lani, Renee and Kuya Ritchie.

A photo with my co-fur loving friend, Sol.

My Shanghai Photo Diary (Part 1: The Basics)

My Shanghai Visual Diary is a collection of photos I took during my half-year stay in a beautiful city in Mainland China. The beautiful city is often called the "Paris of the East" and I spent many days of freedom, friendship and happiness in there. This photo collection is my gratitude to everyone who made that experience for us everlasting and unforgettable.

Part 1 is about the beginning. How we settled down. And how we went with the basics.

February is quite rainy in Shanghai. I always wake up freezing. Thank God water heater was already invented. This is my usual view in the morning taken from where we stayed, the Fudan Foreign Student Dormitory. FFSD is like the United Nations in one building. A lot of foreign students stay there while they take classes in Fudan.

I heard one Korean said during a seminar for volunteering students that most foreign students go to China not to study. They read the Lonely Planet instead of their textbooks. I couldn't blame them. China was very beautiful. This photo was taken inside the convenience store at the ground floor of the dormitory building. That's my Gege (Chinese for big brother) in front of a gondola with some of the most delicious instant noodles in the world.
This is the storekeeper. She became our friend. She takes care of the store in the mornings. All the foreign students get everything that they need from the store- breads, tissues, drinks, milk, beer, nicotine, notebooks, pens and many more. This is where I get my internet card.

After breakfast, we boarded the same vehicles that took us from Pudong International Airport to the dormitory. It was a chance to look at the beauty of Shanghai again. Only this time, I'm already taking pictures. Even the ordinary roads were beautiful in my eyes. Manila is still my first love. But undeniably, roads looked better in Shanghai.

Intramuros Bloggers Challenge 2012: The Wrap Up

Intramuros Bloggers Challenge 2012.

I thought at first that this project was an impossible dream. In the second module of my online classes at the Ateneo-Digital Filipino Certified Blog and Social Media Entrepreneur Program, we were only given about two weeks to create a campaign for our blog. My blog is about Intramuros and in my mind, there’s just no other way that I can truly promote it but to let others experience the beauty of the Walled City by themselves. From the start I know that it is going to be an event for bloggers who shall be experiencing the Walled City and then create blog posts about it.

And yes! It turned out how I envisioned it to be.

IBC 2012 Official Poster | [Creatives by Cristel Diaz]

Three days of creating a full campaign plan. Ten days of making cold calls to potential sponsors and donors and convincing them to invest on my humble project. Three days of encouraging the heritage-loving bloggers to join IBC 2012. Two days of implementation. And then at last! All my efforts paid off. And this is my wrap-up post.

This post- I’d like to fill with my overwhelming gratitude to everyone who supported my project from beginning and until the end and for agreeing with my belief that there is so much to see within the Walled City- that the whole wide world deserves to know about.

First of all, I’d like to thank my Ateneo-Digital Filipino mentors, Ms. Janette Toral and Ms. Fleire Castro, for patiently answering all my makulit questions and countless Facebook messages asking for tips and advices on what should be done and what more can be done. They are my greatest motivators and cheerleaders for getting this project done. Without them, I am not sure if I will have my own initiative to think about creating a project like this- in the middle of my work and other personal responsibilities.

But it turned out to be one of the most fulfilling things I have achieved as a blogger. Thank you so much, Ms. J and Ms. Fleire!

Secondly, to IBC 2012’s generous donors and sponsors. I can’t imagine IBC 2012’s Food Blog Challenge without the FOOD and the Travel Blog Challenge without the TRAVEL. Your “yes-es” made all the difference for this project and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for being our “gateway” to get inside the “Walls”. Thank you Sir JC of Barbara’s Restaurant, Sir Carlos of Celdran Tours, Jeff of Mabuhay Guides, Mr. Sta. Maria and Sir Georgy Porgy of Castillan Tours, Sir Jun of Intramuros Administration and Sir Lito of Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation. To my friends- Dan of URC’s Payless Pancit Shanghai, Ate Wyeth of Starbucks Philippines, Ruth of Ruthilicious and Kuya Jonel of GadgetGambit.com. To my family and to my ever loyal co-organizing friends who helped me during the event- Gian, Iris, Cristel and Marco. You are all gold to me! I thank God for you all!

Intramuros Bloggers Challenge 2012 is, to the truest sense of the word, an event for bloggers. Without my ladies and fellas’ from the crazy and beautiful world of Philippine blogosphere, IBC 2012 won’t be the same. You are the letter “B” in IBC 2012. It CAN'T be and WON'T ever be just- IC 2012!

The bloggers posing with the management team of Barbara's Restaurant

I’d like to thank you all for always being excited, for always having the need “to be there”, for always having that insatiable itch to express and share your thoughts to the world through your blogs, for taking extraordinary pictures which I can only wish I took and for crafting words that create positive impact and influence – I THANK YOU. This project is for you and for Intramuros. You are the modern-day bricks and mortar of the online world. The old Walled City called for our help. Thank you for responding with me.

Sakaytamis: The Purple Jeep

That night on my home, I happened to chance upon this purple and colorful jeepney carrying an oversized image of Nescafe 3-in-1 Sweet 'n Mild, Nescafe's newest variant of instant coffee.

It was a sight to behold! It stood out among the rest of the "King of Manila Roads" with its vibrant colors and design. It seemed like a "female" jeepney among the steel-colored jeepneys in the middle of the road. Can it be the new "Queen of Manila Roads"?

[Source:  http://www.facebook.com/nescafe.ph  ]
Sakaytamis is part of the marketing campaign of Nescafe Philippines in promoting their newest instant coffee variant. In their Facebook fanpage, it was said that Sakaytamis jeeps offered free rides during all of the Mondays of January 2012 from 7pm to 9pm. So cool! I wonder how this brand activation went.

If there's a lesson this jeepney-wrap big idea is telling me, it can be that marketers should make use of the ordinary, the usual and the run-of-the-mill to create something extraordinary in order to get noticed.

THINK MARKETING LESSON #1: To get noticed, make use of the ordinary, the usual and the run-of-the-mill to create something extraordinary.

Tokyo Cafe

It was my first time at Tokyo Cafe. As usual, when I'm new to the place, I'll ask for a recommendation. The friendly waitress who served my table told me to try out their Chicken ala Pobre.

Since I was a big fan of chicken and mayonnaise (need not be together), this dish was a big hit for me. It was sprinkled with sauteed garlic and the chicken was juicy and tasty. I really like it!
